Tangara celebrates 40 years of completely happy life within the high-rise constructing – Westender
Located at the top of Sussex Street, Tangara was officially opened by Blue Care in October 1980 as an economical alternative for independent retirees. Our residents have the “right to live for a lifetime”. The building offers space for 79 residential units, all with a wonderful view of the city and the surrounding hills. Architect Neville Miller’s design ensures the best breezes with the least amount of western sun, and we love that it’s an enclosed community with excellent night staff and secure covered parking.
There are numerous common rooms for private and community social events with a beautiful kitchen, covered barbecue area, modern library, gym and hair salon.
We have a lawn and furnished organic garden with a herb garden, citrus trees and a local beehive. Last but not least, there is a billiard room and a storage room that we call “Dungeon”.
Our residents have a wide range of skills and experience, including teachers, musicians, carpenters, artists, hairdressers, seamstresses, librarians, lawyers and engineers, all with a wealth of life experiences.
Many of us do volunteer work and get involved in the community. At the local level, we successfully protested against the cancellation of bus route 198 in Parliament House and helped with the street picture gardens of Kurilpa Futures.
For the wider community, many of us marched for Extinction Rebellion and Black Lives Matter, and over the years there have been many functions to raise funds for flood and bushfire funds, as well as countless other charities.
