“By 2030, one in five Americans, or 73 million people, will be over 65 years old. It is therefore more important than ever to establish best practices that maintain quality of life. Our new Life Enrichment Program enables seniors to immerse themselves in a holistic, safe and comfortable way in body, mind and spirit experiences that support their overall health and wellbeing, ”said Luis Serrano, CEO of Sunshine Retirement Living. “Through our new research-based wellness program, we can implement innovative therapies and interactive experiences that not only help our seniors, especially people with memory-related disorders, do their best, but also have fun.”
The new robust Life Enrichment Program from Sunshine offers the following features:
Montessori-Style Nursing: Sunshine’s Montessori-based approach to dementia care offers sensory and cognitive stimulation to help residents reconnect memories, relearn skills, and revisit positive emotions to reduce anxiety. While the Montessori Method was originally developed for early childhood education, Sunshine modified the program to take into account the ages and experiences of its residents.
Sensory Spa: Originally tested at Copper Canyon Memory Care in Tucson, Arizona, the new Sunshine Sensory Spa offers stimulation therapies that enhance emotions and reveal memories in dementia and Alzheimer’s sufferers. Sunshine invests in sensory experiences because of their proven mood-enhancing effect, for example in relaxation rooms with sound baths to calm meditations.
MIND Diet-Based Dining: The MIND Diet program recommended by Rush University Medical Center in Chicago inspired Sunshine’s 24/7 dining program, which encourages the consumption of vegetables, berries, nuts, fish, and other brain-healthy foods to achieve that Lower Alzheimer’s Risk Disease and Memory Loss. Head chef Gustavo Castano trains every community chef to prepare meals based on the MIND diet and to take into account any dietary restrictions.
Virtual Reality Program: Using state-of-the-art Oculus VR headsets and dedicated software programs, residents can choose from a variety of virtual experiences that can help uncover beautiful and distant memories or improve socialization when collaborating with others. Popular armchair trips in Sunshine communities include an African safari, swimming with sharks, skydiving, visiting Cleveland Zoo and San Diego Zoo, driving Route 66, and seeing the White House.
Circadian lighting and ionized air filtering: The residents of the Veranda in Graywood, Lake Charles, Louisiana, benefit from circadian rhythm wellness throughout the community by installing Wala lighting. Ceiling lights adjust to simulate sunshine either suppressing melatonin levels for increased activity and alertness during the day or increasing melatonin levels, causing relaxation and drowsiness during the night. In all other Sunshine Memory Care communities, families can request circadian rhythm devices such as alarm clocks, which are dimmed or brightened depending on the daily rhythm to further support their ongoing light therapy. In addition, Air Knight ionized air filtration systems are being tested in several Sunshine communities. Studies have shown that they reduce COVID-19 and Staphylococcus pathogens, improve air quality, and safely remove allergens and irritants.
Sunshine has memory communities in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. Each ward has a family support program that offers educational events and support meetings for caregivers and family members. This support group enables family members to discuss breakthroughs in therapy, updates in care, or other needs, and even help plan virtual calls or face-to-face meetings for residents.
