James Donovan Declares Retirement Plans

After more than 35 years with avocado giant Mission Produce, James Donovan has announced his retirement.

Donovan is affectionately known as “Jim” and currently serves as Senior Vice President, Global Information and Industry Affairs.

He joined Mission in 1984 as Export Sales Director after completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

During his long tenure with Mission, Donovan gained a solid reputation in sales, operations and industry relations, but spent most of his career in a senior position in global sourcing.

“Jim was instrumental in defining our overseas sourcing and sales strategies that have made Mission a global success today,” said Steve Barnard, president and chief executive of Mission Produce.

“He conceived the avocado’s potential from a niche fruit to a mainstream global food. On behalf of everyone in Mission, I would like to thank Jim for his outstanding contributions to our company. “

Donovan has played a key role in developing key cultivation and distribution sources for Mission in Mexico, Chile, Peru, Colombia and New Zealand.

He also laid the foundation for building relationships with leading retailers and buyers in Asia and Europe.

While at Mission, Donovan served many associations in the avocado industry, including the Hass Avocado Board, the Association of Mexican Importers and Dealers, the Peruvian Avocado Committee, the Association of Chilean Avocado Importers, and the World Avocado Organization.

“It has been an honor to be part of the mission since childhood, from a small California avocado packer to a successful global public company,” said Donovan.

“I met and worked with some of the most remarkable and passionate people in the global avocado and manufacturing industry. I am extremely humble with the success we have seen in my tenure at Mission and look forward to continued growth. “
